Day 12: Travel Slows
How does one follow a trip to the Jersey boardwalk to see the great Huey Lewis? With a stop at a dim sum place in a tunnel in Philly of course. The Dim Sum Garden on the edge of Chinatown was a backup to a closed breakfast spot in the market, but it turned out to be one of the better dim sum experiences I've had despite not being cart focused. I could detail at length the copious amounts of food we ate, but I'll just say it was fast, cheap, tasty and just the remedy for our evening previous. Says Mike Ham, "These are the best scallion pancakes I've had, I'm glad we got 12 of them".
In continuing the easy theme of the day, we find a bar to watch the World Cup finale. Ironically, the name of this place is the same as the one place in Seattle I vowed never to go back to: Finn McCools. No objections to this place however, the tv placement is very good and the Irish owner very friendly. I would complain briefly about the game itself, but I find most all soccer to be just as boring; my opinion should be greatly discounted because I feel this way. It's too bad the Championship game was so poor, I feel like this Cup had gained much momentum in the U.S. Case in point, there was one person in this bar in a Netherlands jersey, but was clearly American and somewhat new to the sport. He came with a group of people, after the first half. When they lost, he went outside and didn't come back while his friends stayed well after. I'm guessing he went to buy a Spain shirt - that assumed 1/16 Spanish ancestry will come in handy now guy. See you in four years soccer.
Because the game ran long, we didn't arrive and settle in NYC until 8:30pm. But when we arrived, we most certainly arrived in style. Welcome to ink48, the newest Kimpton hotel in Manhattan. And sure, I suppose we will accept your upgraded room. We are tired from all the food and heat today, and the room is comfortable, so we stay in until 10:00pm before searching for food. Good thing this city actually never sleeps, Sundays inclusive. We eat a leisurely meal at a lovely little place called the Hourglass Cafe, finishing up around 12:30am before crashing in our room for the best sleep we've had in days.
Tomorrow is full day in the city, one of two, food and fun abound.
