- The car stinks. After a week of travel with them, I fear that I stink too.
- The boys pack and unpack with alarming efficiency. Perhaps it is the countless hours of tetris I am sure they both played in their youth, perhaps the 8 days and 2000 miles they have spent together before I arrived, but they pack that car like pros. I stand back and let them work their magic.
- When you sign up to crash the second half of a road trip, you are volunteering to be the whipping girl. I know I provide easy material for constant teasing at times (though I sill maintain lots of people could get confused in central park with a gps), but certainly the fact that Scott uses EVERY bathroom in NYC is just as easy to make fun of. Regardless of where the easiest jokes actually are, I am at the brunt of all jokes for the 7 days we are together.
- It has been a long time since I have really listened to boy on boy banter. Scott Lee and Mike Ham have conversations that go like this "Wouldn't it be cool to drive an ambulance in this city. You would never have to wait in any of the traffic." "Yeah, that would be cool. (insert impression of screeching tires here)" or "I want to be a cop, they get to park anywhere." Also lots of things about sports that I don't understand. When Eileen and I traveled in Europe we talked about relationships and family and feelings. If Scott and Mike did this, it was before I got here.
- Mike Ham and Scott Lee have a special kind of love. They laugh at jokes that no one else would think are funny, they enjoy bizarre pop culture references more widely enjoyed by 14 year old boys, and they complete each others sentences at times. It is sweet and more than once while we are together it occurs to me that I can't imagine them living on opposite sides of the country. I almost say something, but there is no space for sentimental moments on the jam packed itinerary.
My week with Harold and Harold was a huge success. Thanks for the memories and the additional 8 pounds that are now part of me from bagels and sandwiches. Mr. Lee, I will miss you something awful. Mike
Ham, see you in a few days, sadly without your better half.
